Grief has no timetable, memories never fade, and the love we hold for those we have lost remains with us.
Christ Church, Sowerby Bridge, is inviting the local community to come together for a very special evening as it holds its first-ever Service of Light and Hope on Thursday 26th November at 6.30pm.
This new service has been introduced to offer a peaceful and welcoming space for anyone who has experienced the loss of someone they love. It will be an opportunity to remember, reflect, find comfort and share in the hope that light can still be found, even during life’s darkest moments.
For many people, losing someone they love is one of life’s most difficult experiences. While the world around us continues to move forward, grief does not follow a calendar. Whether a loss happened a few weeks ago, several years ago or even decades earlier, the memories and emotions can remain just as meaningful.
The Service of Light and Hope is not simply for those who have experienced a bereavement during the past twelve months. It is for everyone who has lost someone special, no matter how long ago that loss occurred.
A New Opportunity to Remember
The introduction of this service reflects Christ Church’s commitment to supporting the wider community, particularly those experiencing difficult or challenging times.
Revd Tommy Daglish, Vicar of Christ Church, explains the thinking behind this new service:
“One of the things we recognise is that grief doesn’t simply disappear with the passing of time. We can lose someone many years ago and still feel their absence as strongly as ever, particularly around birthdays, anniversaries or special occasions. We wanted to introduce a service that acknowledges this and gives people an opportunity to remember those they love, regardless of when they died.”
The evening will offer a gentle and reflective atmosphere, with prayers, readings and moments of quiet contemplation. It will provide an opportunity to step away from the busyness of everyday life and remember those who are no longer physically with us, but whose influence and love remain part of our lives.
For some, attending may bring comfort in the company of others who understand the experience of loss. For others, it may simply offer a peaceful moment to reflect on treasured memories.
A Special Place for Our Loved Ones on the Memorial Christmas Tree
As part of this time of remembrance, Christ Church’s Memorial Christmas Tree will be on display in the church entrance, offering a special and personal way for people to remember those they have lost.
Visitors will be invited to write the names of their loved ones on Christmas baubles and place them on the tree, creating a beautiful and meaningful display of remembrance.
Each bauble will represent someone who is loved, missed and remembered. Together, they will form a touching reminder of the many lives that have shaped our families, friendships and community.
For those facing Christmas without someone special, the tree offers an opportunity to include their loved one in the season in a simple but heartfelt way.
Everyone is welcome to add a name to the Memorial Christmas Tree, whether their loss is recent or happened many years ago.
Finding Light and Hope Together
As the darker evenings draw in and the Christmas season approaches, this can be a particularly difficult time for those who are missing someone special.
Christmas is often associated with family gatherings, happiness and celebration, but for those who have experienced bereavement, it can also bring a renewed sense of sadness and absence.
Revd Tommy hopes the new service, together with the Memorial Christmas Tree, will offer reassurance and a sense of togetherness.
“My hope is that people will leave knowing they are not alone in their grief. We cannot take away the pain of losing someone, but we can offer a place where people feel supported, understood and able to remember without feeling they have to hide their sadness. The Memorial Christmas Tree is another way of showing that those we have lost are not forgotten. Each name represents a life, a story and a love that continues.”
Although rooted in the Christian faith and its message of hope, the service is open to everyone, whether they regularly attend church, have a particular faith or have never visited Christ Church before.
Revd Tommy adds:
“We have called it a Service of Light and Hope because even in the darkest moments of our lives, there can still be light. That might be found in a treasured memory, the kindness of others or the reassurance of faith. We want this to be a service where people feel welcome, where their memories are valued and where they can find a little peace. Above all, we want people to know that Christ Church is here for them, not just at the time of a funeral, but throughout the journey of grief that follows.”
Everyone Is Welcome
The Service of Light and Hope will take place on Thursday 26th November at 6.30pm at Christ Church, Sowerby Bridge.
There is no need to be a regular churchgoer or to have any previous connection with Christ Church.
Whether you wish to remember a parent, partner, child, relative, friend or someone else who holds a special place in your heart, you will find a warm welcome.
It is hoped that this new service will become a meaningful opportunity for the community to come together, recognising that although everyone’s experience of grief is different, nobody should feel they have to face it alone.
Come as you are, bring your memories, and join us for an evening of remembrance, comfort and hope.
