Shrove Tuesday and Lenten Events at Christ Church
Shrove Tuesday - 4th March 2025
Join us on Shrove Tuesday as we serve delicious pancakes with a variety of fillings from 10:00 am. This event is free and open to the entire community. Shrove Tuesday, also known as Pancake Day, is the day before Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. The term "Shrove" comes from the old Middle English word "Shriven," meaning to go to confession. Traditionally, this day was used to use up all fattening ingredients like eggs and milk before the fasting period of Lent, resulting in the custom of making pancakes.
Ash Wednesday - 5th March 2025
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent. The name comes from the practice of placing a small cross of ash on people’s foreheads during church services, symbolizing confession and a reminder of our dependence on God's forgiveness. This tradition often uses ashes from the previous year's Palm Sunday branches. Join us for our Ash Wednesday service at 7:00 pm.
Mothering Sunday - 30th March 2025
Celebrate Mothering Sunday with us as we light candles for anyone who has been like a mum to us. Each candle costs £1.00, with proceeds going towards the work of the church. During the service, we will also give out posies of daffodils. Our service begins at 10:30 am, and we will display the names of all those for whom a candle has been lit. Details on how to add a candel and the name, jsut visit our Mothing Sunday page
Lenten Lunches
Throughout Lent, after our Sunday Holy Communion service at 10:30 am, we will host a Lenten lunch featuring soup and sandwiches. These lunches are free and open to everyone, providing a wonderful opportunity for fellowship and reflection during the Lenten season.
We look forward to sharing these meaningful events with you and our community.
