Dedication of Altar Frontal and Nine Lessons and Carols Service Brings Together

Dedication of Altar Frontal and Nine Lessons and Carols Service Brings Together Community

On Thursday, 19th December, Christ Church was filled with warmth, reflection, and community spirit during our annual Service of Nine Lessons and Carols, where we also witnessed the dedication of our beautiful new purple altar frontal. The frontal was generously donated in loving memory of two remarkable women, Brenda Dyson and Margaret Pickles, both of whom faithfully served Christ Church for many years as members of the Christ Church Mothers' Union and the church choir.

The Ven. Bill Braviner, Archdeacon of Halifax, led the dedication of the altar frontal, reminding us of the lasting legacy of Brenda and Margaret, who embodied service and dedication to the church. The new altar frontal replaces a previous one that had served us for over 100 years and has now reached the end of its life.

The service itself was a true reflection of the strong sense of community here in Sowerby Bridge. We were honoured to have readings from our MP for Halifax, Kate Dearden, along with our local ward councillors Dot Foster and Adam Wilkinson. Carol Rodmell from Age UK, as well as other members of the local community, also contributed their voices to the traditional readings, creating a rich and diverse atmosphere.

Rev. Tommy, Vicar of Christ Church, said:
"This service was not only a celebration of Christmas but a moment to reflect on the deeper meaning of the season. It was a time to remember those we have lost, but also to come together as a community, united by faith and love. The altar frontal dedication was a moving tribute to two extraordinary women, Brenda and Margaret, whose contributions to our church will always be remembered."

A special thanks is due to our wonderful organist, Nigel Castledine, whose music provided the perfect accompaniment to the evening, and to our talented song group who filled the church with beautiful carols. We are also incredibly grateful to the dedicated team who worked behind the scenes to ensure everything was prepared for this memorable evening.

One of the highlights of the service was how we used lighting to reflect the tone and mood of the evening, helping create an atmosphere of quiet reflection and celebration as we journeyed through the Christmas story.

The evening was a truly special gathering for our community, filled with reflection, song, and shared faith. We look forward to many more moments like this, bringing our church and local community together in celebration.
